July Acquisitions Tip - Everybody's Talkin'
This is the last Acquisitions Tip of 2014/15. I hope they have been
helpful and have made readers feel a little less alone in the often
confusing world of law library acquisitions. If there has been a theme
in the tips, it has been the idea that communication is the key to being
a successful acquisitions librarian. Library acquisitions, by its very
nature, is a give-and-take between a library and the library’s
suppliers. Keeping the lines of communication open between these two
groups is essential to achieving the goals of the library. Happily,
communication is a skill that can be learned and fine-tuned, and there
is no better classroom than the AALL annual conference.
Given that, my final tip is – take advantage of the conference by talking to people face-to-face. Talk to vendors – come prepared with specific questions that relate to your needs. Talk to librarians – if you attend a session you like, talk to the presenters afterwards and let them know how your work relates to their topic. Speak up at the programs – don’t hesitate to ask questions or make comments when given the opportunity. Meet and greet your colleagues at receptions as well as work related sessions – sometimes it’s just easier to meet someone with a drink in hand than after a PowerPoint session.
Likely you have been bombarded with e-mails advertising sessions to attend. You can’t get to every meeting, but if I had only three sessions to go to, these would be the ones I would attend -

OBS Table in Exhibit Hall
Dear OBS-SIS Members,
The AALL annual conference is just about a week away! Thanks to those who have already volunteered to staff the OBS table in the Exhibit Hall. We still need more volunteers though. We especially need someone or a couple of someones during the last Exhibit Hall refreshment break on 7/21 between 9:45 and 10:45 am. Plenty of other time slots are open throughout the conference as well.
Please let me know if you can help or if you have any questions about volunteering.
Thank you,

Reminder: A Book in the Hand is Worth Two in the Store!
Dear OBS Colleagues,
Please see the message below from Stacy Etheredge and (Chief Justice John Roberts' new favorite librarian) John Cannan:
To paraphrase our favorite Philadelphian, Ben Franklin, the theme for the SR-SIS's 2015 Annual Children's Book Drive is "A Book in the Hand is Worth Two in the Store!", meaning that all of the shiny, new books in Barnes and Noble can't hold a candle next to one well-loved book in one child's hand. Especially a child that doesn't get to go to Barnes and Noble.
Well, the response to the Book Drive so far has been incredible. Believe it or not, AALL members have already donated over 300 books. At an estimate of $7 per book, that's already $2100 worth of books for the drive. And AALL is still one week away!
From all of us at SR-SIS, thank you so much. But remember, our thanks are just a proxy for the thanks of the children of Philadelphia who will benefit from your generosity.
For those of you who haven't yet donated, it's easy! Just visit us at our website: Annual Book Drive.
Take care,
John Cannan and Stacy Etheredge, Co-Chairs

FINAL Update: 2015 Marla J. Schwartz Silent Auction
With less than two weeks until AALL now, I'm reposting this message,
in hopes that all of our members planning to donate items to the auction
in Philly will reach out to me ASAP with details of their donation.
Thanks to everyone who has already contacted me thus far and I look
forward to seeing you all in person soon!!!
Cheers,

Good afternoon, TS-SIS members ~
First of all, thanks to all who have already offered to donate items to the silent auction (our major fundraiser for the Marla J. Schwartz Grant) and thanks to all of you that are planning to donate but haven't yet reached out to me directly!
We recently found out that this year all groups are permitted only ONE table in the activities area at the Annual Meeting, so we are coming up with attractive ways to display your donations within the space limitations.
Because of this:
We would appreciate a photo and description of each of your items prior to the Annual Meeting, just in case we cannot display everything on the table. These items will be stored under the table and available upon request.
As you collect your donations, please email or text me a photograph (larger is better) and a quick description of the piece(s) as soon as possible.
In addition to allowing us a chance to create a booklet of materials available that may not fit on the table, this information will also help us better plan for our space constraints and allow us to make educated decisions on potential purchases of display materials such as risers or stands.
(We would also appreciate any display materials you would be willing to bring with you to Philadelphia, such as risers or stands -- email me atamoye@charlottelaw.edu if you have any creative ideas or supplies that can help us overcome this particular challenge in 2015!)
As a reminder, all proceeds from the silent auction go to help fund the Marla J. Schwartz Grant, given to assist newer law librarians and graduate students in library/information studies to attend AALL sponsored events in technical services areas.
All fine pieces of craftwork and handiwork are welcome, and feel free to share this call for donations with anyone you know who would be interested in donating, even if they're not a member of TS-SIS.
Cheers,
Ashley

Roundtables at Annual
Thank you to everyone who provided comment on our recent inquiry into
the vitality and usefulness of our roundtables. The TS-SIS Board voted
to accept the task force's report at our June 17 meeting. During the
past two weeks, the Board has taken action to restore all our
most-recent roundtables based on member enthusiasm and testimonials of
their overriding importance.
Please make to review the offerings below and add to your conference schedules. Not all of them are TS-SIS, but given the subject matter, I thought it would be handy to include them here for quick reference.
Roundtables are valuable times of small group sharing of common challenges and possible solutions. They offer opportunities to connect with your colleagues and build a personal file of go-to experts. We have a solid set of coordinators who are committed to our roundtables and will help transition them into year-round networks. As technology and topics permit, I hope to offer some of them via OnStream videoconferencing software for members not in Philadelphia.
Best,
Suzanne

Roundtables are valuable times of small group sharing of common challenges and possible solutions. They offer opportunities to connect with your colleagues and build a personal file of go-to experts. We have a solid set of coordinators who are committed to our roundtables and will help transition them into year-round networks. As technology and topics permit, I hope to offer some of them via OnStream videoconferencing software for members not in Philadelphia.
Best,
Suzanne

Dine around outings in Philly
These look kind of fun:
Check it out here.
If you’re not familiar, the idea is pretty simple. Each Dine Around is a dining experience with fellow AALL attendees that will be hosted by a local Law Librarian, who coordinates the details of the evening out to a local favorite restaurant. The local host plans the details like where and when the group should meet to travel to the restaurant, making reservations for the group (usually about 8-10 attendees). Dine Around attendees will be responsible to pay for their own meal, drinks, and associated tip. It’s a great opportunity to get to know AALL members outside the usual conference settings and a fantastic way to check out the local flavor (pun intended) of our very vibrant restaurant scene.
Check it out here.

AALL and Thomson Reuters Member Appreciation Event
AALL and Thomson Reuters Member Appreciation Event
Monday, July 20 • 7:00-10:00 p.m.
Join AALL and Thomson Reuters at one of Philadelphia's most popular downtown destinations for this year's Member Appreciation Event. Head to the Reading Terminal Market where local fare from more than 20 vendors will be featured. Local craft beers and other beverages will be available as well as live entertainment and dancing. Just a short walk from the convention center and all of the conference hotels, you won't want to miss this opportunity to mingle and have fun with fellow members and colleagues.
List of TS-SIS retirees, 2014-2015
In celebration of their careers and the many ways that these friends
have enriched our professional lives, I share with you our current list
of colleagues who have retired this past year. I am awed by the
achievements of this group and the wisdom that's leaving (left) our
ranks.
We will recognize each of them at the TS-SIS Breakfast Meeting during Annual, but it all feels somewhat "too little, too late."
Known Retirees (July 2014-July 2015):
Upcoming Retirements (July 2015-July 2016):

What does "reach out" mean??
FROM A TS/OBS FOSSIL:
Fear nothing when volunteering to help serve your colleagues.
Committee chairs are ready to embrace your energy and enthusiasm.
If you don't know WHAT you want to step into, contact Hollie. She's terrific to talk to. There's plenty of room in the TS-SIS elevator.

Important Update: 2015 Marla J. Schwartz Silent Auction
(We would also appreciate any display materials you would be willing to bring with you to Philadelphia, such as risers or stands -- email me at amoye@charlottelaw.edu if you have any creative ideas or supplies that can help us overcome this particular challenge in 2015!)
Cheers,
Ashley

Alma/Ex Libris Users Group Meeting in Philadelphia?
Hi OBS Colleagues,
This post appeared yesterday on the TS-SIS list. At least one other TS list member is also interested in attending such a meeting.
While the OBS Local Systems Committee is sponsoring a program exploring implementation of Koha and Kuali OLE open source software in law libraries during the annual meeting in Philadelphia (more details about that soon), will any Alma users be meeting, formally or informally, during the AALL Annual Meeting?
If you have information about such a meeting or would be willing to help organize or facilitate such a meeting, please contact OBS Local Systems Committee Chair Kevin Carey (carey.107@osu.edu).
Happy Friday to all!

Hi All,
William & Mary is currently considering replacement systems for our implementation of Sirsi's Symphony. One of the systems we're looking at is Alma by Ex Libris. It doesn't look like Ex Libris will be sending representatives to Philadelphia but I wondered if there's a users' group meeting some of us could attend? Does an Alma Users Group exist? Will it be meeting in Philadelphia?
Thanks!!

OCLC Update session
This year's OCLC update session is scheduled for Sunday, July 19th from 11:30-12:45 in PCC-Room 112B. With Glenn Patton's retirement, our speaker this year will be Rob Favini, OCLC Member Liaison for the Northeast region. Rob planned to review the content of Glenn's presentations, but he is not familiar with our organization. This makes your input and questions doubly important.
Please let me know (jkm95@cornell.edu) what topics, questions and concerns you would like Rob to address by Tuesday, July 7th, so I can pass them along.
Many thanks! Hope to see you in Philadelphia.
