Please join us at AALL for the <strong>OBS Local Systems Committee Roundtable </strong>on Monday, July 20th, from 3:15pm - 4:30pm in PCC-Room 111A, which will feature the following program:<br />
<br />
<strong>Title</strong>: <strong>Migrating to Open Source: Koha and Kuali OLE in Law Libraries</strong><br />
<strong>Coordinator/moderator: Kevin Carey</strong>, (Technical Services Librarian, Ohio State University Moritz Law Library) OBS Local Systems Committee Chair<br />
<strong>Speakers: Nate Curulla, </strong>Owner, CRO of ByWater Solutions<br />
<strong>Jeff Gabel, </strong>Cataloging Librarian/E-Resource Manager, Brooklyn Law School Library<br />
<strong>Marjorie Crawford, </strong>Head of Technical Services, Rutgers University law School Library<br />
<strong>Pat Sayre-McCoy, </strong>Head of Law Cataloging and Serials, University of Chicago D’Angelo Law Library<br />
<strong>Description:</strong> Curious about open source ILS systems?
Wondering what it takes to migrate to one? Hear an overview of what
open source is, why a library might choose it, and how a vendor might
help with migration. Then hear the experiences of three law librarians
who helped the following libraries migrate to open source systems:
Brooklyn Law School (III to Koha); Rutgers Law School (III to Koha); and
the University of Chicago’s D’Angelo Law Library (Horizon to Kuali
OLE).<br />

I hope they have been
helpful and have made readers feel a little less alone in the often
confusing world of law library acquisitions. If there has been a theme
in the tips, it has been the idea that communication is the key to being
a successful acquisitions librarian. Library acquisitions, by its very
nature, is a give-and-take between a library and the library’s
suppliers. Keeping the lines of communication open between these two
groups is essential to achieving the goals of the library. Happily,
communication is a skill that can be learned and fine-tuned, and there
is no better classroom than the AALL annual conference.<br />
Given that, my final tip is – take advantage of the conference by
talking to people face-to-face. Talk to vendors – come prepared with
specific questions that relate to your needs. Talk to librarians – if
you attend a session you like, talk to the presenters afterwards and let
them know how your work relates to their topic. Speak up at the
programs – don’t hesitate to ask questions or make comments when given
the opportunity. Meet and greet your colleagues at receptions as well as
work related sessions – sometimes it’s just easier to meet someone with
a drink in hand than after a PowerPoint session.<br />
Likely you have been bombarded with e-mails advertising sessions to
attend. You can’t get to every meeting, but if I had only three
sessions to go to, these would be the ones I would attend - <br />
<ul>
<li>CRIV Vendor Roundtable, Sunday July 19, 11:45 AM, Marriott Grand Ballroom Salon A</li>
<li>“Work Smarter, Not Harder – More Hip Tips for the Acquisitions Librarian,” Sunday July 19, 2:30 PM, PCC 108AB</li>
<li>Acquisitions Serials Meeting and Roundtable, Monday July 20th, 4:30 PM PCC 105B</li>
</ul>
I’ll be at each of the above, and probably at a few receptions. If
you see me, please introduce yourself – and the first person to greet me
at a reception, and mention this <em>Acquisitions Tip</em>, will receive an official <em>Acquisitions Tip</em> flash drive, or a not-so-official acquisitions drink.<br />

<em>Please see the message below from Stacy Etheredge and (Chief Justice John Roberts' new favorite librarian) John Cannan:</em><br />
To paraphrase our favorite Philadelphian, Ben Franklin, the theme for
the SR-SIS's 2015 Annual Children's Book Drive is "A Book in the Hand
is Worth Two in the Store!", meaning that all of the shiny, new books in
Barnes and Noble can't hold a candle next to one well-loved book in one
child's hand. Especially a child that doesn't get to go to Barnes and
Noble.<br />
Well, the response to the Book Drive so far has been incredible.
Believe it or not, AALL members have already donated over 300 books. At
an estimate of $7 per book, that's already $2100 worth of books for the
drive. And AALL is still one week away!<br />
From all of us at SR-SIS, thank you so much. But remember, our
thanks are just a proxy for the thanks of the children of Philadelphia
who will benefit from your generosity.<br />

Schwartz Silent AuctionWith less than two weeks until AALL now, I'm reposting this message,
in hopes that all of our members planning to donate items to the auction
in Philly will reach out to me ASAP with details of their donation.
Thanks to everyone who has already contacted me thus far and I look
forward to seeing you all in person soon!!!<br />
Cheers,<br />Ash<br />

<br />
Good afternoon, TS-SIS members ~<br /><br />First of all, thanks to all who have already offered to donate items to the silent auction (<a href="http://www.aallnet.org/sections/ts/awards/Grants/Marla-Schwartz-Grants">our major fundraiser for the Marla J. Schwartz Grant</a>) and thanks to all of you that are planning to donate but haven't yet reached out to me directly!<br /><br />We recently found out that this year all groups are permitted only <strong>ONE</strong>
table in the activities area at the Annual Meeting, so we are coming up
with attractive ways to display your donations within the space
limitations. <br /><br />Because of this:<br /><br /><strong>We would
appreciate a photo and description of each of your items prior to the
Annual Meeting, just in case we cannot display everything on the table.
These items will be stored under the table and available upon request.</strong><br /><br /><strong>As you collect your donations, please email or text me a
photograph (larger is better) and a quick description of the piece(s) as soon as possible. <br /><br />In
addition to allowing us a chance to create a booklet of materials
available that may not fit on the table, this information will also help
us better plan for our space constraints and allow us to make educated
decisions on potential purchases of display materials such as risers or
stands.</strong><br /><br />(We would also appreciate any display materials
you would be willing to bring with you to Philadelphia, such as risers
or stands -- email me at<a href="mailto:amoye@charlottelaw.edu">amoye@charlottelaw.edu</a> if you have any creative ideas or supplies that can help us overcome this particular challenge in 2015!)<br /><br /><em>As a reminder, all proceeds from the silent auction go to help fund the </em><em><a href="http://www.aallnet.org/sections/ts/awards/Grants/Marla-Schwartz-Grants" target="_blank">Marla J. Schwartz Grant</a>, given to assist newer law
librarians and graduate students in library/information studies to attend AALL sponsored events in technical services areas.<br /><br />All
fine pieces of craftwork and handiwork are welcome, and feel free to
share this call for donations with anyone you know who would be
interested in donating, even if they're not a member of TS-SIS.</em><br /><br />Cheers,<br />Ashley<br /><br />------------------------------<br />Ashley Moye<br />Metadata & Digital Initiatives Librarian<br />Charlotte School of Law<br />Charlotte NCChristina Tarrhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03080667836612961928noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14093254.post-10715971827026543112015-07-07T14:59:00.000-04:002015-07-07T14:59:05.536-04:00Roundtables at AnnualThank you to everyone who provided comment on our recent inquiry into
the vitality and usefulness of our roundtables. The TS-SIS Board voted
to accept the task force's report at our June 17 meeting. During the
past two weeks, the Board has taken action to restore all our
most-recent roundtables based on member enthusiasm and testimonials of
their overriding importance.<br />
Please make to review the offerings below and add to your conference
schedules. Not all of them are TS-SIS, but given the subject matter, I
thought it would be handy to include them here for quick reference.<br />

I apologize for the short notice and incomplete details. More
specifics are coming, but room changes for Management Issues and New
Catalogers won't be definite until Conference, so make sure to stop by
the TS table or attend the TS-SIS business meeting on Monday morning.<br />
Roundtables are valuable times of small group sharing of common
challenges and possible solutions. They offer opportunities to connect
with your colleagues and build a personal file of go-to experts. We have
a solid set of coordinators who are committed to our roundtables and
will help transition them into year-round networks. As technology and
topics permit, I hope to offer some of them via OnStream
videoconferencing software for members not in Philadelphia.<br />
Best,<br />

<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
If you’re not familiar, the idea is pretty simple. Each Dine Around
is a dining experience with fellow AALL attendees that will be hosted by
a local Law Librarian, who coordinates the details of the evening out
to a local favorite restaurant. The local host plans the details like
where and when the group should meet to travel to the restaurant, making
reservations for the group (usually about 8-10 attendees). Dine Around
attendees will be responsible to pay for their own meal, drinks, and
associated tip.</blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
It’s a great opportunity to get to know AALL members outside the
usual conference settings and a fantastic way to check out the local
flavor (pun intended) of our very vibrant restaurant scene.</blockquote>
